3 single images:

The face was the background image. Some beauty retouching below my eyes to remove crinkles. The paper was copied and flipped horizontally to have two edges. After that they were arranged so that they form a cut. Then via a layer mask with a pretty sharp brush the paper cut was extracted by painting the rest of the paper black in the layer mask to hide it. Layer property was "negative multiply". The hand was extracted using the magnetic lasso. This was pretty easy as the contrast to the background was high enough. Later on this hand was added as a layer and the edges were fine tuned using a layer mask and a round brush with a slight soft edge.

Some fine tuning like painting the shadow inside the hole, adding a shadow under the thumb, adding shadows below the whole hand, colour saturate the eyes a bit, sharpening, text with drop shadow and hiding my shirt with a soft light layer painting black with a soft brush.

So all in all no real difficult techniques. It took me about 2 hours for taking the photos (selfportrait, hand and paper), importing them into lightroom, basic editing, exporting them to photoshop and doing the steps mentioned above. After all I converted it to 8 bit Mode, changed the color space to sRGB and saved it as a JPG. The original PSD file has about 400MB and 19 Layers.

Strobist info: One silver reflective umbrella directly over camera, powered by a Nikon SB-26 at 1/2 power, triggered via Cactus remote. Nikon D300, 50mm 1.8@f10, ISO 200, cable release
